			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you have been marketing online for any length of time, you will have heard of Google Adwords and you will likely be familiar with the name Perry Marshall.  I actually worked with Perry on a project a number of years ago and have kept an eye on him since then.  Why?  Because I can relate to him, he is genuine and he really puts out good quality information.  He knows his stuff.</p>
<p>But.</p>
<p>This article isn&#8217;t about Perry Marshall.  It is about &#8220;reason why&#8221; marketing.  Now &#8220;reason why&#8221; marketing is basically running an ad, promotion or sale and then justifying it with a &#8220;why&#8221;.  See, it is a proven fact that people will take action and be more co-operative if you give them a reason to.  It is almost as though there is a purpose behind it now and they need to get on board with what is happening.</p>
<p>For example, today is Perry Marshall&#8217;s birthday.  He turns 40 today.  Why do we care?  Well, actually we don&#8217;t!  But that didn&#8217;t stop Perry from running a promotion.  In fact, he has been running promotions for the past week and a half leading up to today.  All this week there have been special teleseminars with esteemed guests.  Yesterday an email went out to the list indicating that all materials were 15% off until tonight.  There are a few teleseminars today.  All because it is his birthday!</p>
<p>Well, actually, it is because Perry wanted to do a promo and he used his birthday as an excuse!</p>
<p>You see, none of us actually cares when his birthday is or that he is turning 40.  But, he has made it into an event!  A marketing marathon.  You can&#8217;t help but get caught up in the excitement.  I am checking schedules to see who is talking and when.  Rearranging my day so that I can be at the phone at the right time to call in.  In fact, i am even using that excitement to create this post on my blog.  For you see, the fact that Perry was using &#8220;reason why&#8221; marketing to have this promo was good enough reason why I am writing.  That is the point.  The reason can even be a stupid one.  But if you do something big and then offer a reason for it, you are more likely to get a positive response.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It is very easy to get caught up using technical jargon as soon as you are familiar enough with something to be able to use the jargon.  In some ways, it can almost make you feel somewhat elite to try and talk like everyone else does about a product.</p>
<p>There is something that you must remember about sales though &#8211; see, your customers don&#8217;t talk like that.  They won&#8217;t understand what you are saying.  When writing sales copy or even when talking to people, it is very important to be able to communicate your ideas to them &#8211; in a way that they can understand.  Remember that when talking to a prospect, it is for their benefit, not yours.  You are trying to explain to them what something does or how it works.</p>
<p>Leave out the technical jargon and try to explain how/why something works in plain English.  Sales is about communication.  You need to be able to clearly communicate to your customer &#8211; and that means they need to be able to understand what you are saying.

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have spent a bit of time buying and selling websites online now.  There are a few things that keep coming to mind as I look to a potential site to buy.  It also occurred to me that these things could be added to any site in order to increase value to the site owner.  You may want to step back for a minute and take another look at your site&#8230;</p>
<p>1) Add value to your info product by offering a physical version of it.  Can you send the files out on a cd or can you package the information in a workbook format and actually send it out to the customer?  Any time you can add a physical component to your info product, you can charge more for it as it adds much perceived value to your product.</p>
<p>2) Can you add additional services?  If you sell software, you may be able to charge extra for installation or setup.  Possibly some training &#8211; or make some training videos and either add them as part of the product (and charge a bit more) or offer them as an upsell.</p>
<p>3) Make sure the site has an upsell.  There should always be something else you can offer a customer when they go to purchase.  They are already at your site and looking to pay you.  A percentage of customers will take whatever else you can offer them at that point.</p>
<p>4) Do you have affiliates?  You may want to look at adding an affiliate program to your site.  Invite others to promote your products.  They will sell it and you both will win.</p>
<p>5) Is there any opportunity to set up some kind of membership component to your site?  Can you invite people to join into a monthly membership right at the point of purchase?  Offer them the first month free.  Send them updates on the product, related interviews with successful people who are doing what you are promoting, etc.</p>
<p>There are some ideas you can take right away to increase your bottom line.</p>

<p>Check out www.kunaki.com for more details, but they will burn a CD on demand (one at a time) for only $1.75 and mail them out (dropship) for $5 extra.</p>
<p>Why would you do this?</p>
<p>Well, that is easy.  People have a perception that something delivered via download is only worth so much money.  Once you take that same product and send it to them on a physical CD that they can touch and actually put in their computer, you increase the perceived value in the minds of your customers.</p>
<p>I have a site where I offer physical delivery of the product (a $37 ebook) for an additional $12.99.</p>
<p>40% of my sales take the upsell</p>
<p>The info on the CD is exactly the same as what they download.  I just offer delivery.  This adds $6.24 to my bottom line, per sale of the delivery.  Not much, but it adds to it.</p>
<p>Next, see if you can find other products or ideas to put on a CD in order to add value to the products you are selling.  You might be able to turn your $37 ebook into a $67 or $97 product &#8211; delivered.</p>
<p>Keep adding value and increasing the price.</p>

<p>The site is basically a shopping style site.  You go there, find what you want and add it to your cart.  Check out when you are done.  It is fairly simple &#8211; not too fancy.  I was running some Google Adsense on the side of it.</p>
<p>Site has been running along with very little change for the past few months.  The other day I get this email:</p>

<p>There are a number of website scripts you can get if you want to build something interesting.  There is a good resource for website scripts at <a href="http://www.easy-scripts.net">www.easy-scripts.net</a></p>
<p>They offer a variety of website scripts from a unique memorial script to a yahoo answers style question and answer script to a fun joke script and a guess the stars script.  So you can get the type of script that will fit well with your site.  They are all very reasonably priced.</p>
<p>A good one for marketers is at <a href="http://www.searchengine-submission-script.com">www.searchengine-submission-script.com</a> where you can purchase a script that will allow your website visitors to submit their websites to search engines for indexing.  That is the kind of thing people will come back to your site for.

<p>An upsell occurs when you have already made the sale in the customers mind.  He has decided to buy and is digging for his credit card so that he can get the product you just offered him.  Now is the time to push the upsell.</p>
<p>Now you shouldn&#8217;t just grab any old product and offer it out at this point, though that may even bring in more money than not offering an upsell at all.  Remember, the customer is already sold, they have already decided to spend their money on your product or service.  You need to take this opportunity to increase the size of the sale or order.</p>
<p>The best upsell you can create is something that you know the customer will need or want in the future (because you know the market) that the customer doesn&#8217;t realize they will need or want.</p>
<p>Let me say this again.  The little moment between the time the customer reaches into his back pocket for his credit card and the time he hands you the number (or enters it on your website) is a goldmine for you.  You need to be able to very quickly educate the customer on the benefits of buying the larger package or the bigger item or the add on right now.</p>
<p>This is done online with web hosting.  You go to some domain name providers and enter the domain name that you want. They briefly explain to  you that you need to also purchase the .biz and .net version of your new domain name along with your .com.  They say it is for your protection, so no one else can register those domains and make money off you name.  AND then they offer it to you at a discount.  After reading that little blurb right there you almost feel stupid if you don&#8217;t take the offer.  That is an example of a great upsell.</p>
<p>When was the last time you went in to your local electronics store and bought something?  What happens when you gt up to the counter to pay for it?  They offer you an extended warranty.  That is the upsell.  Until you got to the counter, you hadn&#8217;t really thought of that but while you are digging your credit card out of your pocket, they offer you an additional 2 years warranty for only $39 but you have to buy it now.</p>
<p>Take a look at your products or services and see what you can bundle together or offer as an upsell.  Write a quick blurb about it.  It has to offer a benefit to the customer and should be offered at a price that they can only get right now, as they are purchasing.</p>
<p>Watch how that increases your profits.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Did you ever wonder why (looking back in history) you can look at 2 companies or people and one of them succeeded while the other did not?  Sometimes the difference in what they did was very subtle but one is remembered and the other forgotten.  It wasn&#8217;t always for lack of resources or timing or any of those things we attribute to being successful.  Sometimes it is because one has a clearer idea of who their market is or who they are really catering to.</p>
<p>McDonald&#8217;s restaurant knows this.  They cater to kids.  They have kids friendly restaurants and give out little toys and create an atmosphere that is appealing to this target market.  I have 4 young kids and it is a pretty special time for them to go to McDonald&#8217;s.  I really don&#8217;t care for the food that much but we go because the kids enjoy the environment.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s look at Google and Yahoo.  Both are successful search engines, very large, have been in business for some time and are well known.  But see, Google knows who their market is.  The marketer.  If you want to advertise on Google, they make it very easy.  You can go there and within 5 minutes set yourself up an adwords account, put up ads and start advertising.  You can pull up your stats and see what your campaigns are doing very quickly.  The stats aren&#8217;t real-time but not too far out.  If you want to display their ads on your website, no problem.  Set yourself up an adsense account and start showing ads that are relevant to your content and cater to your viewers.  No problem.</p>
<p>They are in business to do business and if you are a marketer you can work with them.</p>
<p>I recently went to Yahoo Search to set up a PPC account.  It was a bit more involved and not nearly as straight forward.  I haven&#8217;t been back in a while to check my stats because I have a hard time finding the login button on their page and I don&#8217;t feel like searching for it.  When I signed up for my account, I had a coupon for some free advertising and it took a few days to get that applied to my account &#8211; after I emailed them.  Just seems like I am bothering them if I want to advertise with them.<br />
I am going to quote from an email I just got from Pay Per Click authority <a title="Perry Marshall" href="http://www.perrymarshall.com">Perry Marshall</a> (in regards to the former Overture/Yahoo keyword research tool):</p>

<div align="center" />&#8230;.Deserves to have their ass kicked by Carl Icahn,</p>
<div align="center" />shareholder mutiny, hostile takeover by Microsoft, or</p>
<div align="center" />whatever other grim fate befalls them.&#8221;</p>
<p>The point here is to know who your market is &#8211; and it may not always be what it looks like on the outside.   Google is a search engine that the average person uses and is familiar with.  If you were to ask around, you might think they are in the business of offering a search service to people looking for things online.  But Google knows that their market is the marketer.  If they cater to the marketer by making it easy to do business, they will have a successful search engine.  They will remain popular because the people who are advertising (read: spending the money) are welcome to use their service.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For some reason, some people think that marketing online is different than a traditional brick and mortar business marketing offline.  The truth is that marketing is marketing and what works, works.  Independent of the tools you use.</p>
<p>Online marketing is simply direct response marketing.</p>
<p>If you have a traditional, offline business, you need to be looking at some of the tactics used online by marketers and apply them to your own business.</p>
<p>For example, many online marketers understand that they need to sell a product and then offer an &#8220;upsell&#8221; &#8211; a higher priced offer to the person that just gave them money.  This tactic should be used offline as well.  When someone purchases your product or service, are you offering an upsell?  Are there other items or services you can bundle together and promote?</p>
<p>This is done very well by McDonald&#8217;s &#8211; &#8220;would you like fries with that?&#8221;<br />
If they can make money selling simple french fries for an extra few cents per order, then surely you can offer your clients something extra.</p>
<p>Marketing online is the same as marketing offline &#8211; just using a different form of media.</p>
